On October 22, 2017, Dr. Lionel D. Meadows became a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

WHAT IS THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS?

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is an association of surgeons founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. The ACS accomplishes this goal by setting high standards for scientific and surgical education and practice for its member surgeons. The ACS also provides continuing education to ensure surgeons keep abreast of the latest information on surgical subjects.

HOW DO I KNOW MY SURGEON IS AN ACS FELLOW?

The letters FACS (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after a surgeon’s name mean that the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.

SO WHAT ARE DR. MEADOWS’ CREDENTIALS?

In addition to his dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Biology and Chemistry, Dr. Meadows completed his Doctorate of Medicine, and was board-certified by both the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). In addition to his new Fellow status in the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Dr. Meadows is also a Fellow in both the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Association of Cosmetic Surgeons (AACS). Although it is not common to list a Bachelor’s degree once a Doctorate degree has been earned, Dr. Lionel Dain Meadows’ education and fellowships could be listed as, in the order they were earned:

BA, MD, FACOG, FAACS, FACS

Yes, we counted. He now has more letters of the alphabet after his name (18), than are included in his full name (17). That is a rare and extraordinary accomplishment!
